In this activity, students appropriate and manipulate the words, grammar and themes of a “classic” work in order to develop their own styles as creative writers. By turning an iconic medium into a popular genre, students learn that classic writers have done the same thing, borrowing and stealing other people’s words.
In OEB 191: Physiological and Biochemical Adaptation, students present one or two papers in primary literature to the class and lead the discussion. After retrieving the papers from online sources or the library and reading them, the presenters prepare a PowerPoint show to explain and summarize the findings.
For History 97, the sophomore tutorial, students peer review each other's work. Each student writes a primary source based paper, which is based on a shared source base that all of the students have read. Students have to provide detailed written and oral feedback on each of their peers' papers. To guide their responses, the instructors provide a list of questions or points to consider. Students are to identify the argument and evaluate the extent to which it is supported by evidence, the organization of the paper, and the quality of the prose.
In Nathan Kaplan's general education course EMR 14, "Fat Chance," students play games to connect the probability concepts learned in lecture to some fun activities that the students are familiar with. On some broader level, the goal is to see that probability is at work in lots of situations outside of the somewhat artificial classroom setting.
The purpose of this activity is for students learn more about "Problem Oriented Policing" (P.O.P.) methods, in contrast with traditional and community approaches to policing, and it was meant to especially drive home the challenges and complexities of the Scanning, Analysis, Response, and Assessment (SARA) model of police work.
Graduate students in Anne Shreffler's seminar, "The Fromm Foundation and Contemporary Music in the United States," collaborate during the semester to produce an exhibition in the Loeb Music Library entitled, Composing the Future: The Fromm Foundation and the Music of Our Time.
This open-ended project sends groups of students to interview non-profit or community organizations dealing with racial, ethnic or migration issues. Groups write final papers integrating their own and other groups' experiences, in addition to the class readings.
Professor McCarthy's class has student "provocations" in discussion sections each week. Students have to provoke the discussion in some way (debate, video analysis, commentary from contemporary news linked to week's readings, etc.) Students are paired before section to plan the provocation and how they would moderate the debate/discussion. They also meet as a pair with their TF. In class, they moderate the discussion/debate, often involving audio-video materials.
