Students read an advanced paper at the beginning of a course and compile a list of terms they do not understand. As the course progresses, the instructor defines these terms. At the end of the course, students re-read the initial paper to gain an appreciation of how much they have learned.
After field trips to three different museums, students create a short 90 second podcast in which they discuss one object encountered. Through this project, students engage with primary artifacts and practice their communication skills.
Emily Russell designed this for Physics 95: Topics in Current Research aimed towards junior and senior concentrators in Physics. Students were encouraged to develop their skills in explaining complicated physics topics in layman’s terms through a short video presentation. This project incorporates public speaking skills and video technology like Final Cut Pro.
Students provided feedback on the highlights of lecture (Roses) and confusing concepts (Thorns) through a weekly online form, providing students with time for reflection and instructors with the ability to address areas of confusion.
In Jacob Barandes' Physics 302, students are driven to learn how to teach and communicate physics by giving small, mini-lessons throughout the semester. They are then driven to perform a longer lesson as a final project to show what they have learned during the term.
