During the section, students write a paragraph or several in imitation of Hemingway's style. They can write about any topic. The class then discusses what the experience was like. Students volunteer to share their work and, as the class reacts, students are prompted to explore what they recognize stylistically and the instructor records observations on the board. After recording observations, the instructor refers to a passage in the Hemingway book they are reading (either The Sun Also Rises or Farewell to Arms), and the class discusses whether the bit of prose adheres to the description they made of the stylistic elements. This leads into a conversation on why Hemingway writes this way.
