Econ in the News

In Trisha Shrum's section of Ec 10, students are asked to find current news articles relating to the theoretical concepts learned in class.

Each week, a different student or pair of students sends an article out to the class 24 hours before section. Students are expected to read the article in order to contribute to the discussion. At the beginning of class, the presenter stands up in front of the class and gives a two-minute summary of the news article he or she chose. Then the student poses one or two discussion questions to the class about the article. Ideally, he or she should emphasize points that connect the theoretical concepts being taught in class to the real world issues discussed in the article. The presenter then leads the discussion of the article. Shrum has students find articles and lead discussions on the topics learned in the previous class instead of the topics currently being covered.
