Group Problem Solving

Students work in groups to answer problem set questions in section and then discuss the answers with the class.

At the beginning of class, students receive section handouts prepared by the head TF. Then, they work in small groups of 2 to 4 students to solve one of the problems together. The problems cover a range of topics from basic concepts to more advanced applications. They are usually given about five minutes to do this. Then the TF facilitates a discussion with all groups about the answer to the problem. The point of the activity is for students to apply what they have learned in lecture to solve problems. They are able to use any materials, including textbooks and lecture slides. It is important for the instructor to encourage all students to participate in the group activity and discussion.
