A Before and After Close Paper Reading: Hydrogeology Edition

Students read an advanced paper at the beginning of a course and compile a list of terms they do not understand. As the course progresses, the instructor defines these terms. At the end of the course, students re-read the initial paper to gain an appreciation of how much they have learned.

Partnered Armed Conflicts — Cooperation Simulation

Students play the role of one of six entities engaged in a partnered military operation with the primary goal of protecting the civilian population under tight time constraints. Students must cooperate with each other to share intelligence that will help meet military objectives and protect civilians, all in line with international law.

Parisian Narratives in Virtual Reality

Students engage in cultural and linguistic immersion through virtual reality (VR) film narratives in a beginner’s French class.

Team Web Development Project

Students practice creating a web development project and presenting it to an audience in teams, essential skills in this field.

In French 59: French and the Community, undergraduates teach French to Haitian immigrant children in order to improve their own French skills and to both serve and learn about the Haitian-American community.

Sounding China

This was a semester long project. Throughout the semester, graduate students (many of whom had little previous exposure to the course material) studied the history of Chinese music theory, the Jesuit missionaries who transmitted it back to western Europe, and the reception of Chinese culture there in the 18th century.

World Music YouTube Culture Show

Dr. Michael Heller created this project for a World Music Class for International Students taught at University of Massachusetts, Boston. Students were encouraged to develop traditional academic skills and new media skills in this World Music YouTube Culture Show Project, by incorporating written word, public speaking, and storytelling tools like Zeega, Powerpoint, or Meograph in this project.
