French and the Community

Goal/s:
  • Students develop their oral communication skills in a foreign language through teaching French to children.
  • Students gain teaching skills through planning and executing lessons. 
  • Students serve the Haitian community of Greater Boston by teaching children a language that is important to Haitian culture and acting as role models and mentors.
  • Students learn about Haitian culture through direct interaction with children and families.

Class: French 59: French and the Community

Introduction/Background: Undergraduate students enrolled in the course teach French to Haitian-American children at two community centers in Greater Boston on at least 3 Saturdays out of the 10 week term.  In class, students learn about Haitian culture, pedagogy, and French vocabulary and grammar in order to prepare them to teach students and improve their own mastery of French.

Conceptual Mapping for the Big Picture

Overview: In this activity, students work as a group to create one large conceptual map that includes many or all of the key concepts from the course using large Post-it notes and dry easer markers.

Class: HGSE T543: Apply Cognitive Science to Teaching and Learning (section)

Goals

(1)  For students to see the big picture and connections between the concepts of the course.

(2)  To assess where students are at in their understanding of the course concepts and where more work might be needed.

Theme and Variations: Understanding Musical Style

This activity took place as part of an ongoing study of the various conventional forms in Classical music (sonata, concerto, etc.), and also contributed to a larger, semester-long conversation about the ways in which we deal with the nebulous concept of "style" in music. Coming into the class itself, students possessed a basic knowledge of musical rudiments such as melody and harmony. For this particular activity, students had already been introduced to the idea of a "Theme and Variations" form, and had listened to several examples.

Public Opinion Polling Challenge

This activity created was by Benjamin Schneer, a graduate teaching fellow for GOV30, to help students understand methods in public opinion polling. Schneer provided a dilemma for students to resolve using information about public opinion polling found in their textbook or online resources. Students enthusiastically participated in this active learning exercise to incorporate classroom knowledge in a practical setting.

World Music YouTube Culture Show

Dr. Michael Heller created this project for a World Music Class for International Students taught at University of Massachusetts, Boston.  Students were encouraged to develop traditional academic skills and new media skills in this World Music YouTube Culture Show Project, by incorporating written word, public speaking, and storytelling tools like Zeega, Powerpoint, or Meograph in this project.

Globalization Character Simulation

In Caroline Light's course, WGS1238: Consuming Passions, students participate in a simulation where each student acts out the persona of either an invented/fictional character or a real public figure. They then debate a question regarding globalization in order to develop critical thinking and contextual skills around the course's topic on agency in the global marketplace.
