Blitz Thesis

Overview: Students respond to a quote by and formulating for and against arguments on the spot. 

Goals: Encourages students to develop mental agility by constructing arguments quickly and helps prepare students for exams.

Procedure:

Cells vs. Buildings

Created by Kostia Bergman, Erin Cram, Wendy Smith, Scott Dobrin, Presque Isle, and Judith Roe, this lesson for an intermediate Cell Biology course encourages students to take a big-picture view of the cell by comparing cells to buildings in order to think about the dynamic processes within cells. The lesson utilizes a jigsaw and quick write.

Conceptual Mapping for the Big Picture

Overview: In this activity, students work as a group to create one large conceptual map that includes many or all of the key concepts from the course using large Post-it notes and dry easer markers.

Class: HGSE T543: Apply Cognitive Science to Teaching and Learning (section)

Goals

(1)  For students to see the big picture and connections between the concepts of the course.

(2)  To assess where students are at in their understanding of the course concepts and where more work might be needed.
