In her Gov 97 sections, Shauna Shames had students take turns being discussion leaders. Shauna led the first class to model what the discussion leader should do. As a group, her sections decided when they would need the discussion questions by. Ultimately, they decided that the discussion leader would post 3 questions to the list by Friday at 8pm. Then, by Sunday night, everybody had to send to the list their one page response to one question. Students had to read each others' papers before class so that they could refer to them.
Shauna notes that if she could do it again, she might have had students write much less and do it on a wiki. She also notes that she ended up having to drop this structure because of the workload for the students. Nonetheless, she points out that it went well for the period that she did do it.
