For Bart Bonikowski's junior tutorial on Political Sociology, students are asked to submit response papers weekly to engage with the readings. Students receive credit for completion rather than content. The response papers are posted online for other students to read and the instructor prints them out to bring to class. These papers facilitate discussion by answering questions such as, "What are the central points of the reading?" or "How could you incorporate the reading into your own research?" Professor Bonikowski often refers to comments made in the papers in order to facilitate discussion. He also encourages students to ask questions that they brought up. Students don't mind this because the papers are already made public on the website.
Professor Bonikowski encourages the students to read each other's beforehand, but finds that students tend not to do this. Nonetheless, he finds that some students get very engaged in their responses and that it strengthens discussions.
