Suzanne Blier's course, "World Fairs: Art and Exposition" makes extensive use of maps and geo-referencing to address issues of space, time, and geography in the study of colonial and world fairs.
Professor Blier uses Worldmap (worldmap.harvard.edu), software used to access and explore geospatial information, to help students visualize plans and analyze space. The students create their own worldmap sites, in addition to referencing and analyzing existing maps. These activities are incorporated into a weekly blogging assignment and through discussions and reflections. Students are asked to present their blogs and geo-referenced maps in class and discuss their experience creating them. To help them learn how to use the software in a fun way, Professor Blier holds in-class competitions to test skill learning.
