Student are challenged to think about the meaning of democracy by evaluating whether section is democratic. This discussion led to the installation of several semester-long democratic tools. In this lesson, the instructor started off prompting students whether sections are democratic. The discussion then broadened to whether classes should be democratic and how this could be possible. The discussion led to the installation of several "democratic" mechanisms, like the use of a Googledoc, to be used throughout the semester. The functioning of this "democratic" mechanism was to be evaluated throughout the semester. This one-class activity became a semester-long experiment with making democracy work on a smaller scale.
