Throughout this course, students create and refine a definition of "culture" based on readings, discussions, and papers. At the beginning of the semester, students are asked to write their own definition of culture in class, which they then update periodically. Before and after each reading students are asked to think about and revise their conception of "culture."
As the course progresses, the class is able to organize their original definitions of culture into different categories based on traditions and aspects of the literature. Thus, the students are able to see how their ideas fit with existing definitions and conceptions. Ultimately, the purpose of the activity is to show students the wide range of definitions. Then, in their papers, they are encouraged to use specific language to discuss the various concepts that constitute "culture."
